Moodboard - Initial visuals

Here is a moodboard of our initial ideas for our music video. We collating these visuals by doing research into the indie music genre. We did this by searching for indie music artists, artists such as: Ellie Goulding, Nina Nesbitt, Lorde, Lana Del Ray, Kate Nash, Foxes and Florence and The Machine. We focused on female indie artists as for our own music video we knew we wanted to focus on a female artist. Due to our research, we found that a lot of emphasis was placed on the idea of individuality. The idea that this artist is different from any other artist, and this was shown through aspects of mis-en-scene such as clothing, hair and make-up. Often the artists were wearing casual, simplistic clothing which connoted that they did not care about how they looked, creating this idea that they are individuals.

Another generic convention of indie music videos was the use of outdoor locations. In music videos such as Florence and The Machine - Dog Days Are Over and Nina Nesbitt - Stay Out, outdoor locations are used, as they are easily accessible and free to use, this would be a bonus for music producers as artists of the indie genre tend to have less money spent on the production of their music videos. Outdoor locations such as forests, fields, town/urban locations,

Within our research we also found that a mix of narrative and performance were frequently used.

Time Management Update

I have completed my first part of research and planning into music videos and aim to post my next stages by the end of the week commencing the 29th of September. I am slightly behind at this stage as my group and I are waiting for a reply from our chosen artist Alex Megan, thus meaning this has delayed my 'Initial Ideas' blog post.

Things that inspire me...

Creativity

1. What is creativity?
Creativity is expressing unique and innovative ideas

2. How can you be more creative?
I can be more creative by thinking outside the box, not always going for straightforward solutions/answers.

3. Where does it come from?
Creativity comes from aspects of our lives we see everyday and learning how to challenge and interpret them differently.

4. What role does it play in creating a media production?
Creativity plays a significant role in creating a media production as producers and directors are always looking to express new and unique ideas through media platforms such as music videos because they want their videos to stand out and be memorable for being original and innovative, subsequently resulting in a larger profit.

Creativity depends on... taking a chance, if you're not prepared to be wrong you will never come up with anything original.

Creativity is... being prepared to take chances, being prepared to be wrong and being prepared to think about things in a different way

I agree with this statement because in education today it is clear that students fear being wrong and so therefore don't try at all, worrying that they will be laughed at or not taken seriously, resulting in students keeping quiet and never trying to challenge an idea.

I think this helps you to be more creative but not necessarily automatically makes you creative.

Taylor Swift - Music Video Analysis

How artists create their brand identity

Arctic Monkeys brand identity from indiajonesmedia

ONE DIRECTION: BRAND IDENTITY
How do One Direction create their brand identity and create a coherent promotional package?

One Direction are an English-Irish pop group comprising of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson. They are signed to Simon Cowell's record label Syco after finishing third in the TV singing contest XFACTOR in 2010. One Direction have released three studio albums with a fourth studio album about to be released this year. The group have created their brand identity as a male pop group through their music videos, appearence and album covers. All five members of the group are stereotypically good looking which subsequently helps them to make a profit. The groups appearance is that of a stereotypical, clean-cut, fresh-faced pop boy band. In the early stages of the groups music career they each wore specific outfits which fans and audiences could relate and associate with each individual band member.

The group has also created a coherent promotional package through their music videos. They have done this by using intertextual links with the film The Inbetweeners, as in the video for 'One Thing' and 'Live While While We're Young' they emulate the dance used in The Inbetweeners film.

The group have also created coherence between music videos by making upbeat, energetic videos, usually set in outdoor locations.

The same font for the groups name has been used across all three album covers which creates coherence and continuity.
